Fashion and Fantasy

After spending most of my Saturday reading Ovid’s Metamorphoses, I have rekindled my affair with fairy tales. The book is absolutely captivating with its tales of love, horror, adventure, and creation. These stories of transformations and metamorphoses reminded me of the collections of Matthew Williamson and his affinity for peacock prints and feathers (in fact, his store in the Meatpacking district reminds me of a tropical forest dedicated to exotic birds), the cerebral eccentricity of Dries van Noten, and the fantasy-esque collections of Marchesa. Speaking of fairy tales and metamorphosis inspired fashion, I also couldn’t help but think back to the Atlantis themed McQueen 2010 S/S collection. In other words: life can be made beautiful by fascinating fairy tales.

The moral of the story? I wish I had an unlimited budget to express every whim and state-of-mind I experience.

I love spring naps. The only problems are the Alice-in-Wonderland esque dreams and your inability to extricate yourself from them. Fortunately, I have a Bobby’s Burger Palace opening to attend (and meet Bobby Flay!) in an hour, so that ended this stream of very very absurd unconsciousness. Everything was bizarre, other-worldly but at the same time everyday occurrences, which reminded me of the works of fashion photographers Luciana Val & Franco Musso. A photoshoot with these people must be amazingly fun, I wonder if it will be comparable to a real trip down in Wonderland?

The Art of Religion

Happy Easter! With a good portion of the population gone for the holiday weekend, I had a relaxed night-in with my friend from postfashionism and watched Angels and Demons. On top of Dan Brown’s convoluted plot filled with historical references and apocalyptic illusions, I noticed the sheer beauty of the art, architecture, and yes, clothing associated with the religion. The Church’s appreciation for fine craftsmanship should not come as a surprise to anyone; the commission of St. Peter’s Basilica, Raphael’s Vatican Stanze, and Pope Benedict XXIV’s affinity for Prada all contribute to the close relationship between religion and art. My religious art inspiration was apparently shared by Danny Roberts at Igor + Andre, whose Friday Inspirations from last week featured really interesting paintings by El Greco, Meisel, Hans Holbein the Younger, etc.

So here is an eclectic mixture of art and religion…

All these talks of art and religion can not go on without mentioning McQueen’s final collection debuted in Paris over a month ago. Style described the collection as “…a poetic, medieval beauty that dealt with religious iconography while recapturing memories of his own past collections” and the lines and the balance between the ornate surfaces and the simple lines of the collection “…transmitted the grace of the medieval Madonnas and Byzantine empresses McQueen had been studying.” Well said, Style.

Gaga over Shoes

After several days of gloom, we finally have the beautiful spring weather again! On top of the glorious sun, my day was filled with several near heart-attacks and an almost reenactment of the Defenestration of Prague , which thankfully culminated in the possession of Lady Gaga concert tickets for the fall! Translation: as soon as the tickets were available for purchase, my friends and I sat in front of the computer screen trying to snatch the next available seats. When we lost the first batch of tickets due to the asininity of the website, I almost stood up and stormed out of the third floor classroom through the window (holding true to the actual Defenestration of Prague, there was a pile of manure/fertilizer right outside of the classroom). But thank goodness we managed to purchase the next available seats without further hinderances. For the rest of the day, I’ve been waltzing around campus giddy with excitement over this feat and the perfect weather; however, I quickly spotted a few “trends” I thought I had left behind forever in high school.

The first of these interesting fashion statements was the orange fake-tan. I remember breathing a sigh of relief my first week of Freshman year when I spotted no such bronze concoctions. Yet alas with the ever-growing popularity of Jersey Shore and its way of life, the tanning salon is back in business.

Another revived trend I spotted was the Victoria’s Secret PINK gear. Since the majority of our student population is from NYC, LA, or various metropolises across the globe, I haven’t seen the pastel colored sweat-suits for the past few years.

Both aforementioned phenomena sent flashbacks to my childhood in all-American suburban neighborhoods (complete with white-picket fences, golden retrievers, and meticulous lawns), and I am not sure if I am ready to resettle into that lifestyle so quickly again. On a brighter note.–the SUN also calls for sunglasses, and seeing aviators, over-sized hangover shades, Rays, etc around campus reminded me of my unsuccessful quest for finding the perfect pair A.K.A. ANY pair that frames my face. My defense for this blatant demonstration of retail ineptitude is backed up by Roger Farah himself, who said a few days ago that the Asian market for sunglasses is very different because our “eyes are different.” My only beacon of hope thus far are the Tom Ford frames, which are difficult to come by in the first place. The ones I have tried on proved to be slightly large for my face but I shall make do with them if I do not find a style that fits better before June.

I’ve been told that the Whitney is the answer to my prayers, we have to find out very soon.

Also, I have already started worrying about what to wear to see Gaga. I think I might have to invest in those Chromat cages after all, and combine them with these awesome Miu Miu cage shoes

*sigh* If only I knew how to walk in heels properly. I was never really an avid shoe fan because I realized that there are no such thing as comfortable shoes in life. Unfortunately. I jumped on the Tory Burch flats bandwagon last year because I thought they were the answer to comfortable flats, but alas, the pinch on your heel become quite unbearable after a few hours. I fully took advantage of the rain in the past few days and lived in my bright white rainboots, but alas, when I saw Suzie bubble’s visit to Nicholas Kirkwood studio and the cool shoes spotted on a Nylon editor I recently met, I couldn’t help but dream that I could maneuver freely in heels.

The weather today was absolutely atrocious, but my day was brightened by the arrival of a nice, medium-sized package. My belated birthday presents to myself are the Shipley & Halmos Colter jacket in Geezer Black and the Geren Ford Rivet Shift in black. Both of them look fabulously BAMF and I immediately wore the jacket to the Roger Farah speech. The gist of the speech was basically that Ralph Lauren reached success by recognizing talent and supporting fresh designs, which is clearly a unique concept that remain a mystery to all the other companies in the world.

Always “Dress to Kill”

If you know me at all, you would know that Gossip Girl is my not-so-guilty pleasure of choice every Monday night. The show inspires me in fashion, wit, and ingenuous insults. Tonight’s episode centered around fashion and its struggle between remaining as an individual art-entity and capitulating into mass consumerism and its crude yet lucrative implications. I was slightly dismayed at the initial turn of events but the ever-so-BAMF Eleanor Waldorf did not disappoint in the end. My favorite quotations of the night are:

“I would rather lose a deal than lose myself”

“One of the things that make a [Waldorf] woman special is that we don’t fit in EVERYwhere”

and of course,

“…whatever you do, always dress to kill.”

I just adore those two!

Speaking of dressing to kill, I found some fitting pieces from All Saints that I am putting on my never-ending wishlist.

Musings of a rainy day

The sun rarely shines in the northeastern city I currently reside. Unfortunately. On gray days like these, I like to defy nature and wear a splash of color (today was a canary yellow short cardigan with bright white rainboots), but for the most of this spring and probably into the summer, I am feeling lots of black, neutrals, and metallic grays. I know I am not following seasonal protocols, and certainly will not entertain florals, but there is just something impossibly chic about noir attire contrasted with summer sunsets, pastel nail polish, and breeze in your hair. And that is why one of my closest friends (*sigh* my better half) and I are committed to minimalism (it really is the best look for stick-thin, curveless, and boyish figures) throughout the summer and into the indefinite future, which makes us turn our attention to the New York fashion scene of Joseph Altuzarra (soo happy that he got the CFDA nomination for Swarovski Award for Womenswear), Gareth Pugh, Wayne Lee, Shipley and Halmos, and Toni Fracesc. Sadly, although I can see myself wear all of these looks to work over the summer, I do not yet have the means to make that into reality.
